Educational approach
Everyone is different. People don’t fit neatly into boxes and there is no single method of learning that will suit everyone. I try to be creative with my teaching in order to find ways to empower nursing, allied health and other students, with flexible approaches to conceptualising and practicing mental healthcare. My aim is to empower students with knowledge and skills that enables them to provide compassionate empowering care to people from all walks of life.
I believe that every person, no matter what kind of mental ill-health they might experience, has a right to quality mental healthcare provided freely by society. With this ethic in mind, I teach students how they can contribute to a world where a person’s right to recover social and emotional wellbeing is supported by easy access to quality, recovery focused, mental health services in their local community.
Good mental health is extremely valuable, when in balance it can assist us to cope with the challenges that life presents and explore where meaning and of satisfaction lie. My background as a nurse practitioner in mental health means that alongside familiarity with academic research, I bring clinical expertise in psychotherapeutic and pharmacological approaches, which inform my teaching as I seek to inspire students to take an interest in each person’s individual needs and circumstances, then deliver individualised, trauma informed and recovery oriented care.
